Some people step onto a volleyball court and seem to get everything right from day one. Their timing is natural, their movements effortless, and everyone around them whispers, “This one is gifted.”

But not every volleyball story begins that way. Some stories begin with missed serves, awkward passes, and the determination to return to the court after every mistake. They are built through consistency, resilience, and a love for the game that refuses to fade, even when the journey gets tough.

The truth is, volleyball is not only about the players who start strong. It is also about those who grow into the game, who earn every improvement, and who prove that passion can be just as powerful as talent.

Today’s People of the Game feature tells one of those stories.

Meet Oloyede: The Player Behind Jersey No. 07

From the outside, Oloyede looks like any other determined volleyball player chasing the next point. But behind jersey No. 07 is a journey shaped by learning, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to becoming better with every game. His story is a reminder that success in volleyball is not always about where you begin, it is about how willing you are to keep going.

He currently plays as a Middle Blocker for Lagos State University Volleyball Team, where he has earned a reputation for his work ethic, composure, and willingness to give his all every time he steps onto the court. Whether it is a routine training session or a competitive match, Oloyede approaches the game with the same level of focus and determination.

For him, volleyball is more than just chasing points or wearing a jersey. It is a space where

discipline is built, friendships are formed, and every training session becomes another

opportunity to grow. Those who have watched him play know that behind every serve, every dive, and every rally is someone who is constantly pushing himself to be better than he was yesterday. But his journey did not begin with polished skills or instant success. Like many players, it started with uncertainty, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

Every journey has a beginning, and for Oloyede, it started long before he knew what volleyball truly was. His first encounter with the sport came during his junior secondary school years, where volleyball was part of the school curriculum. But as he looks back now, he laughs at the memory.

“Knowing the game now, that wasn’t volleyball we were playing then. We played on the grass and were just trying to get the ball over the net for fun.”

It was not until he gained admission into Lagos State University (LASU) that volleyball took on a whole new meaning. Walking around campus during his first few days, Oloyede found himself drawn to the university’s sports complex. The volleyball courts, basketball courts, indoor sports hall, and football pitch were unlike anything he had seen before. “I hadn’t seen structures like that before,” he recalls. “Since then, I kept going there because I was already a sports lover.”

Then came the moment that changed everything. One afternoon, he watched the LASU volleyball team training. There weren’t many players on the court, but something about the game captured his attention immediately. “If you believe in love at first sight,” he says with a smile, “that’s exactly what happened.” Curious, he walked onto the court to ask questions. Instead of being turned away, he was welcomed by the team with open arms.

Just a few days after resuming at LASU, Oloyede became part of the university’s volleyball team. The journey had officially begun. There was no shortcut waiting for him. He had to learn every fundamental of the game from scratch, guided by the team’s captain, Ucha Onyekachi, who led the team in the absence of a coach.

Looking back today, Oloyede believes volleyball found him just as much as he found volleyball.

“Nobody advised me to play. Nobody forced me. No coach discovered me. It was just me finding a game that felt right from the very beginning.”

Three years can change a lot.

What started as curiosity soon became commitment. Oloyede threw himself into the game, competing in tournaments such as the Legacy Inter-Tertiary Games, Japa Games, NASGA, Legacy Championships, and the Lekki Thunder Games. With every competition came new lessons, tougher opponents, and a growing belief that he belonged on the court.

Then came a defining moment.

In 2025, he earned a place with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Volleyball Team as a middle blocker during the Nigeria Volleyball Federation Division One League. For someone who had only discovered the sport a few years earlier, it was a milestone that reflected just how far he had come.

But the journey didn’t stop there.

His biggest career highlight came when he stepped onto the court in the Nigeria Volleyball Federation Premier League, competing alongside and against some of the country’s best volleyball players. “Playing in the Premier League was a moment I’ll never forget,” he says. “It showed me that hard work truly opens doors.”

Yet behind those achievements was a battle few people ever saw.

There were moments when the thought of giving up felt louder than the dream itself. The

challenges were real injuries, balancing academics with training, long journeys to practice, pressure to perform, and even doubts about whether volleyball could truly create the future he envisioned.

“There were times I questioned if it was all worth it,” he admits. “But every challenge made me stronger. Instead of walking away, I kept showing up and kept the dream alive.”

That decision to keep showing up is what transformed volleyball from a university hobby into a purpose.

Spend a few minutes talking to Oloyede, and you’ll quickly realise that volleyball is only one part of who he is. Away from the court, he’s someone who enjoys his own company. Whether he’s playing video games, researching topics that interest him, or simply spending time alone, he values moments of quiet reflection. It is in those moments he learns the most about himself. That same mindset carries into his training.

While he enjoys team sessions, there’s a special place in his routine for working alone. To him, off-court training is more than building strength or fitness, it is about building character. “Off the court, it’s personal. It’s peaceful. You get to assess yourself, understand your strengths and weaknesses, and stay disciplined,” he explains.

His commitment to growth extends beyond volleyball. As a graduate of Economics from Lagos State University, Oloyede believes education and sport can work hand in hand. While many see volleyball as just a game, he sees it as a pathway to greater opportunities, from earning scholarships to building an international career.

Looking ahead, his ambitions are just as bold off the court as they are on the court. He hopes to pursue postgraduate studies in Economics, Econometrics, and Mathematics while building a career as a Financial Analyst and Business Analyst. At the same time, he dreams of competing professionally in Europe or Asia, proving that dedication can create opportunities far beyond home.

For Oloyede, success has never been about choosing between education and volleyball. It is about pursuing both with the same discipline, the same consistency, and the same belief that every step forward counts. When Oloyede reflects on his journey, he doesn’t talk first about trophies or personal achievements. Instead, he talks about belief. Belief that showing up every day matters. Belief that hard work eventually pays off. Belief that where you start should never define where you finish.

His advice to every young player dreaming of a career in volleyball is simple:

“Keep the dream alive. Keep working hard. Don’t quit. Show up every day, train the right way, stay educated, invest in yourself, and stay disciplined. At some point you’ll get tired, but remember you don’t quit when you’re tired. You quit when you’re done.”

As our conversation came to an end, one message stood out above everything else. Oloyede hopes to be remembered not just for the points he scored or the matches he played, but for the example he set.

“I want people to remember me as someone who never stopped believing. I wasn’t

the tallest, I didn’t have the easiest journey, but I kept showing up, kept working,

and kept chasing the dream. I want my story to remind people that where you start

doesn’t determine how far you can go.”

Oloyede’s story is proof that when passion meets consistency, remarkable things can happen. Every volleyball player has a story that deserves to be told. Today, it was Oloyede’s turn.
