Nigeria Fails To Reach African Volleyball Championship Semi-Finals, But There Is Hope

Nigeria's men's volleyball team have been knocked out of the 2026 African Men's Nations Volleyball Championship after Morocco edged them 3-2 in a closely fought quarter-final in Tunis.
Nigeria started the match strongly, taking the first set 25-20. Morocco responded in the second set, winning 25-15 to level the match.
The third set again went Morocco's way, putting the North Africans one set away from the semi-finals and leaving Nigeria with little room for error.
Nigeria responded in the fourth set. It was a tight contest, but the Nigerians held their nerve to win 26-24 and force a deciding fifth set.
Morocco had the better finish, taking the final set 15-12 to win the match 3-2 and book their place in the semi-finals.

The defeat ends Nigeria's hopes of reaching the last four, but the team had already shown its ability to fight through difficult matches during the tournament. Nigeria also reached the quarter-finals after a five-set comeback win over Algeria in the previous round.
Head coach Ryan Masajedi praised the team's effort after the match and said the players could take lessons from the defeat.
According to Masajedi, Nigeria had to fight its way back into the game, with the players on the bench also making an important contribution.
The coach also said the team already understands its strengths and weaknesses and now needs to use the experience from the match to improve going forward.
Nigeria's final assignment at the championship will now be their classification fixture as the team looks to finish the tournament strongly.
In the other quarter-final matches, Cameroon defeated Ghana 3-2, while Algeria also needed five sets to overcome Egypt and secure their place in the last four.
Morocco, meanwhile, moves into the semi-finals, where they will face hosts Tunisia.
